Book Review
The Complete
Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies
by Vasant Lad
Ayurveda, the 5,000 year old system of health and healing from ancient
India, contains invaluable wisdom for anyone interested in maintaining optimum
health. It's power comes both from its comprehensiveness -- it takes into
account all of the factors which influence health on all levels -- but also from
its recognition of the importance of different psychological and physiological
types and the tailoring of healing interventions to individual needs.
Becoming familiar with the principles of Ayurveda, understanding ones own
constitutional type and requirements for health, and partaking of the many
healing tools Ayurveda contains is well worth time spent in study. The ideal way
to take advantage of Ayurveda is to work with a "vaidya" -- an Ayurvedic
physician who is skilled in pulse diagnosis and the prescription of remedies.
(Working with an expert would be especially important for someone with medical
problems.) Much of practical value can be learned, however, through reading, and
Dr. Vasant Lad's book, The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies is an ideal
place to start.
The book contains clear and succinct descriptions of the main principles of
Ayurveda, the constitutional types, and a host of practical remedies ands
suggestions for self-care. Many of the remedies can be used without much study
or understanding of your own constitutional type. As you study the book and
learn more about yourself and your tendencies, you will be able to make better
use of its suggestions. This book is useful both for beginners and those who are
already familiar with Ayurveda.
Sample Remedy from this book:
A Relaxing Bath for Anxiety. A warm bath of ginger and baking soda is
soothing when you are anxious. Use 1/3 cup ginger and 1/3 cup baking soda in a
tubful of water. Soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
